In today’s digital age, content creation has become an essential part of business and personal branding. Whether you are a blogger, influencer, or entrepreneur, creating great content is the key to building a strong online presence and connecting with your audience. However, with so much content available online, it can be challenging to stand out from the crowd. In this blog post, I will explore how sharing your story can help you create great content and connect with your audience.
The Importance of Sharing Your Story
Sharing your story is about being authentic and transparent. It’s about letting your audience know who you are, what you stand for, and what motivates you. When you share your story, you create a personal connection with your audience. You show them that you are not just a faceless entity, but a real person with real experiences and emotions.
Sharing your story also helps to build trust with your audience. When you are open and honest about your experiences and challenges, it shows that you are not trying to hide anything. This transparency builds trust and credibility with your audience.
Additionally, sharing your story helps to differentiate you from your competitors. No one else has your unique story, experiences, or perspective. No one has your specific voice, tone of voice, or facial expressions. By sharing your story, you stand out from the crowd and create a unique brand identity.
How to Share Your Story
Sharing your story can be a daunting task, especially if you are a private person. However, there are ways to share your story without revealing too much personal information. Here’s a great read on Creating Engaging Content: Introduction to Best Practices for Content Creation with Intention.
- Start with Your Why: Your why is the reason behind what you do. It’s your motivation, your purpose, and your passion. Sharing your why helps your audience understand what drives you and what you stand for.
- Be Vulnerable: Being vulnerable means sharing your struggles, failures, and challenges. It’s about being honest about the obstacles you have faced and how you have overcome them. This vulnerability creates a connection with your audience, as they can relate to your struggles.
- Share Your Journey: Sharing your journey means sharing the steps you have taken to get where you are today. It’s about sharing the ups and downs of your journey and the lessons you have learned along the way. This helps your audience see that success is not a straight line, but a journey with many twists and turns.
- Keep Some Things Private: While it’s important to be authentic and transparent, it’s also important to keep some things private. You don’t have to share every detail of your personal life or every struggle you have faced. Choose what you share carefully and only share what you are comfortable with. I’ve posted a quick snippet of my latest podcast episode #228 on Connect with Your Audience Through Your Story: How Sharing Your Why Can Help You Create Great Content
Examples of Sharing Your Story
- Business: A business owner may share their why by explaining why they started their business and what problem they are trying to solve. They may be vulnerable by sharing the challenges they have faced in their business, such as financial struggles or difficulties with employees. They may share their journey by explaining the steps they have taken to grow their business, such as implementing new marketing strategies or hiring a business coach.
- Personal: A personal blogger may share their why by explaining why they started their blog and what topics they are passionate about. They may be vulnerable by sharing their struggles with mental health or body image. They may share their journey by explaining how they have grown and learned through their experiences and the lessons they have learned along the way.

Sharing your story is a powerful tool for creating great content and connecting with your audience. By sharing your why, being vulnerable, sharing your journey, and keeping some things private, you can create a personal connection with your audience and build trust and credibility. So, take the time to reflect on your story and how you can use it to create great content and connect with your audience. Remember, your story is unique, and it’s what sets you apart from everyone else. By sharing it authentically, you can create a strong personal brand and build a loyal following.
But it’s important to note that sharing your story should never feel forced or contrived. If you are struggling with confidently sharing it, it probably means it’s not meant to be shared, it’s not the time or will never need to be shared, or you are not sharing the right story and need to do revisit this area. Nothing should feel forced or give you an unsatisfactory feeling of sharing something you yourself don’t even feel comfortable voicing out whether it’s through a posting, audio, blog, etc.
No worries. It can be a process. It can take a few times to get this right in the season you are in. It should come naturally and be a part of your overall content strategy. If you are struggling to share or conjure up your story, start small by incorporating personal anecdotes into your content or sharing a behind-the-scenes look at your business or creative process. If you need assistance in this area, I have a VOXER coaching system to assist you! Or go to my Bravery Academy page.
Lastly, always remember to stay true to yourself and your values. Don’t share anything that goes against your beliefs or makes you uncomfortable. Your story is a powerful tool, but it’s only effective if it’s genuine and authentic.
Once again, sharing your story is a powerful way to create great content and connect with your audience. It helps you stand out from the crowd, build trust and credibility, and create a personal connection with your audience. By following the tips outlined in this blog post and staying true to yourself, you can use your story to build a strong personal brand and achieve your goals.
