Navigating the Emotional Rollercoaster of Building Your Online Business

Beginning any journey of building your online business, whether it’s a podcast, a blog, or any digital venture, is a thrilling adventure. However, the road is not always smooth. I will discuss the real and raw emotions that can emerge during the process and unveil strategies to conquer them.

1. The Thinking Phase: Overcoming Procrastination

The inception of any business begins with the crucial thinking phase. Think. Think. Think. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or hesitant during this period. The key is to break down your thoughts into manageable steps. Starting taking those small steps forward.

Consider creating a mind map or a to-do list to organize your ideas. Celebrate the small wins to build momentum and overcome the procrastination monster that often lurks in the early stages.

For instance, let’s say you’re contemplating starting a podcast. Instead of being paralyzed by the enormity of the task, focus on researching your niche for 20 minutes. Small, consistent actions can turn your aspirations into achievable goals. Research does not sound to overwhelming does it?

2. The Startup Blues: Dealing with ‘Not Feeling It’

As you transition from the thinking phase to the startup phase, there will be days when you’re just not feeling it. That’s perfectly okay. Acknowledge that these feelings are a natural part of the process. Overcoming those business slumps is allowing gentle grace over your process. Rather than forcing yourself through the motions, find activities that reignite your passion. I call this the Peace Hour. I will share more on that next few weeks on Episode 247. Consider incorporating short breaks for activities like a brisk walk, creative writing, or engaging with inspirational content. If you’re running a blog, for example, taking a moment to read a fascinating article in your niche can rekindle your enthusiasm and creativity.

3. The Focus Challenge: Tackling Loss of Concentration

Loss of focus is a common challenge faced by entrepreneurs. To conquer this, establish a structured routine. Boost your business focus by breaking your work into focused intervals with short breaks in between. The Pomodoro Technique, a time management method, can be a game-changer here. The Pomodoro Technique is a way to manage your time. You work hard for 25 minutes and then take a short break for five minutes.

Additionally, prioritize tasks and set realistic goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Let’s say you’re managing an e-commerce site. Instead of viewing it as a this overwhelming task, break it down into smaller tasks—updating product descriptions, optimizing images, or responding to customer inquiries. Celebrate these achievements, regardless of how small, to maintain motivation and momentum. Everything counts toward growth and success!

4. Embracing the Process: The Journey Matters

It’s important to remember that building a business is a process, not an overnight success. This is your Entrepreneurial Growth Journey and it’s going to be different from anyone else’s journey. Embrace the journey and the valuable lessons that come with it. Celebrate and embrace both successes and failures—they are integral stepping stones to growth. Surround yourself with a supportive community or seek guidance from a mentor who understands the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship.

Consider sharing your journey on your podcast or blog. Transparency about your struggles and victories not only makes you relatable to your audience but also creates a sense of authenticity that can resonate with potential clients or customers.

5. Making Friends Online: Connect with People

On the internet, making friends is more than just meeting at events. Talk to your audience on social media, join online groups, and work together with other podcasters or bloggers. What you are doing is, you are making friends for business growth. Having a network not only helps you reach more people but also gives you a group of friends to share ideas and solve problems.

For example, if you have a podcast, invite friends from your network to share their stories. This not only gives your audience different viewpoints but also helps you get to know more people in your field.

6. Learning from Mistakes: Turning Problems into Solutions

Mistakes happen, but how you deal with them decides how successful you’ll be. Instead of seeing them as big problems, look at them as chances to get better. You are growing smarter and learning how to handle and navigate business problems. Share stories of tough times on your blog or podcast, and talk about what you learned and how things got better.

Write a blog post about a tough time you had and what steps you took to make it better. This not only shows that you’re a real person but also helps others going through similar things.

7. Keep Learning: Staying Smart in Your Field

Things change a lot, so keep learning to stay ahead. Keep up with what’s happening, take classes that help you, and join webinars or watch online meetings. Doing this not only makes you better at what you do but also keeps your work fresh and interesting.
